Since its inception, the Office of the Theme Leaders and the SDTI Theme have been funded by philanthropy. The OTL was established to implement the Academic Themes strategic initiative. This was made possible in 2003 by philanthropic support, allowing the implementation of a new thematic academic leadership structure and underwriting the initiation of the programme. The Office was reviewed on behalf of the benefactor in March 2007 by Dr. James Buizer of the Office of the President in Arizona State University.
